New Beginnings

New Beginnings

Pencil and ink with digital collage.
Giclee print on archival paper

I created this print for my mum and two best friends for Christmas this year.
I found this quote and it just seemed appropriate for everybody. Life is full of endings but with every ending there is a beginning. Heading towards the New Year I can’t help looking back on the mixed bag that was 2010. University has ended for me and a career has begun, one child has ended his high school years one her primary and they each will begin a new chapter. There has been heartache and there has been laughter, we have had to say goodbye to people and pets we love but have made new friends along the way.
I’m not trying to look too far into the future, life can change with the blink of an eye, but I look forward to the year ahead and trust that everything that comes my way has a purpose and that I will meet each new thing and use it to grow into more of myself. Only time will tell what new beginnings are waiting but it’s kind of exciting thinking about the possibilities.
Happy New Year everybody and may yours be filled with peaceful and blessed endings and beginnings!

I know Christmas isn’t all about the gifts ,but it is nice when you get presents that show that the people around you understand you!

Ever felt like there was a piece missing and nothing seemed to quite fit? Or maybe, you can’t find the place where the people matched your shape?

IF - Winter

Winter-4 copy

It’s a little bit hard to think ‘winter’ when we are sweltering under the Australian summer sun. I am at heart a winter girl though, I think it may be the residual ancestral  consciousness that harks back to my Celtic roots.
So in remembrance of the my Celtic forebears here is a Irish sprite tapping a merry jig amongst the snowflakes.

I need a Silent Night

Well this little video I found at The Inadvertent Farmer was just what I have needed all week.

Merry Christmas to everyone and may your day be filled with the love of family and friends. Gifts and feasts are nice but it’s the one’s you share them with that makes it special, and to those who struggle for whatever reason on this day, I pray a special day of peace for you.

He did it!!!!!

Yep, my boy passed Year 12 and graduated.

I couldn’t help but go and try casting spells at him “Expelleramus”, (in case your wondering I’m alluding to Harry Potter, yes I am that geeky) hehehe.
Aww, my two spunky boys.

Talk about a kilowatt smile.

There’s a bit of a story to all this. The night before his graduation he was in Melbourne attending the Muse concert. In case your not familiar with Australian geography to get from Mildura to Melbourne Micah had to catch a bus (31/2 hrs) then train (21/2 hrs) to Bendigo (my mum’s house) then another train (2 1/2 hrs) to Melbourne. We had pre-booked all his travel and the plan was for him to leave the concert a half hour early so he could catch the train back to Bendigo, stay at my mum’s, then catch the return train/bus to Mildura in time for his graduation. Well all was going to plan until he arrives at the Melbourne train station to find there are no trains to Bendigo!!!!! Frantic phone calls at 11.30 at night, oh crap!
Well luckily he had his ticket to prove he had the booking and someone on the train company’s end had mucked up so they offered to put him up in a motel overnight, this was no good because he would have missed his grad so they paid for a taxi to Bendigo! It would have cost them over $600. Thankfully he arrived home safe and sound.
Now I have to face him leaving home in couple of weeks, he is moving to Bendigo to start a Diploma of Engineering *sigh*, gonna miss him :(

IF - Phenomenon

Well I don’t know, the last couple of IF topics I just couldn’t find inspiration for and well I must say this is kinda hard too. I think my creative spark might have taken a vacation (can I came too?)

This week's topic is "Phenomenon"

"Beauty is a primeval phenomenon, which itself never makes its appearance, but the reflection of which is visible in a thousand different utterancesof the creative mind, and is as various as nature herself."
~Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Anyhoo, all I can say is this girls hair is some kind of phenomenon!

I’m not really in to sending cards at Christmas time but I thought this might make a nice card at some stage. For this year it might just be an email card.
Can you believe how fast Christmas has come around? I am so incredibly not prepared in any way, even the gift side of things is totally not done and I’m the type to have it sorted in July!!!! The wheels have definitely fallen off Christmas this year…..

The Christmas rush…

hidden_treasures

*Just a note that I’m being totally slack in acknowledging image sources (ie. not one of mine above, just like it) at the moment, no time, oh well, sorry!

Last night was the final event in the school year, speech night. Here we acknowledge the achievements of both students and teachers. So now there are no early morning lunch making and dashes to the bus, no more searching for that pesky school uniform item or homework that needs to be found. *Sigh of relief*

Our sch00l ranges from the tiny little Preps (5-6 yrs) to the gangly Year 10’s (15-16), what a difference! Time seems to buzz by so fast, one minute your wiping noses and the next your handing over car keys.

Is it just me or does anyone else feel like screaming for everything to just SLOW DOWN PLEASE. In fact it was a quote in the outgoing School Captains speech that really stopped and made me think for a moment.

“Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift. That’s why it’s called the present, savour the present.”

How true! This time of year seems to be all about presents, as we crazily search for that perfect gift. But I feel more and more the need to savour the present, to give of my time, to focus and be fully engaged with the people around me instead of constantly thinking minutes, days or weeks in advance.

I’m not much into New Year’s resolutions, but I do want to strive to keep my eyes on today and leave tomorrows sorrows or joys whatever they may be for the future today’s. I don’t want to miss what’s going on right in front of my eye’s now, today.

The Great Big Stitched Postcard 2…

My swap postcard has finally arrived from the lovely mixed media artist Kimberly all the way from Florida. It is just fabulous! As you can see it is taking pride of place on my drawing table. Thanks so much Kimberly xoxo.soggy dog studios 3

new music to swoon to!

Here I am, where are you?

Here I am

Some random scribbling. I haven’t participated in Illustration Friday for a couple of weeks and I have about a hundred ideas buzzing around in my head at the moment but can’t seem to find any time to just sit down and scribble. This was just an idle doodle to try and ‘prime the pump’ and get the hand and mind flowing. Ahhh, to have a place that I could go to get away from the house/dishes/laundry/kids/husband and just draw, draw, draw. It’s also been really hot and humid here these past few weeks and I’m never much good in the heat, enough excuses JUST DO IT!!!

Here’s a couple of things I’m crushing on at the moment these awesome cushions, I just love embroidery.bird pillows embroidered pillows

I’d love to be able to tell you where I got these images but can’t! How cute are those bird cushions? Love this little owl too but is only available if I fly to Paris…anyone want to fund that?

Have had to suffice with a little crocheting silliness making my own owl lovely while sitting under the air conditioner.

Then I’ve been moving, cleaning & reorganising.

And my latest oppy find, some cute vintage sheets.

So that’s me this week, what ya’ll been doin’?

once upon a time…

Thirteen (less 7 days) years ago a little princess was born in the land of Oztrayleea. She came as great surprise to her parents as the Wizard Ob-steet-rishan had predicted the birth of a little prince. Regardless she was welcomed with much joy and love and plenty of hurried shopping for a pink wardrobe.savannah babyThe years have passed and my little princess has grown, she turns thirteen in a few days. While I feel nostalgic I’m also so proud of her confidence, and how comfortable she is, just being exactly herself! And what a nice little person she is, I not only love her to bits, I really like her.

Leaving behind the Primary School years she will be commencing High School  next year. To celebrate, her class had a special dress up dinner at a grown up restaurant. There would be no dress in sight of course, “dresses are dumb!” But I did manage to add a little bit of sparkle.

Grade 6 Formal Tea 005

Dinner of course finished with ice-cream! Their not quite THAT grown up…….and lots of fun and laughs with her friend…

Grade 6 Formal Tea 021

…what a cute looking bunch of kids, and their nice too…

Grade 6 Formal Tea 016 …and we can’t forget the best teacher ever Mrs. Inkster, she will be sadly missed as she moves interstate to work at a new school as Principal.Grade 6 Formal Tea 022

What a fox!

I’m having a bit of a vague moment because I cannot remember where I saw this the other day (was it at Mikes? Just checked and yes it was!) but I did go to  Matsutake and buy the pattern cause it’s just so cute and such a cool idea for a novelty lamp. I’m planning to make the lamp version next but I thought I would have a go at the softie first and tweek it if I need to.foxlightoffThis little gal will be a part of my Softies for Mirabel contribution, I might make a few more, I found some beautiful vintage sheets in purple tones at the op shop that would look sweet.  And I think I might do different eyes next time and I think for the lamp I might scale it up a bit.

Oooo I just saw that the softies are due to be a Meet Me at Mikes tomorrow!!!!!!! Well I guess that’s it for softie contributions for this year. In the post tomorrow they go!foxy 001

Tutorial – Christmas garland

In the spirit of trying to get into the spirit I have been endeavouring to slowly change the tacky glitzy Christmas decorations into more meaningful and mindful handmade ones. So I spent an afternoon making this little garland to replace the tinsel.

It’s a simple non sew Christmas garland  for your Christmas tree but it can hang over a door, window or along a mantelpiece too.

I have used a traditional Christmas colour theme but I’m also going to make another bigger one out of some of my vintage pillowcase materials. Not so much for Christmas, these will adorn Savannah’s window after I paint her room.

What you will need

1.  A pen, pins, some paper and something to trace around to make your pattern. I used this little tin.

swap cards & xmas garland 010 copy

2. Some scissors and pinking shears (oh, and some craft glue too!!!)

swap cards & xmas garland 008 copy

3. A selection of materials that you like. I have five different ones here.

swap cards & xmas garland 007 copy

4. Some fancy ribbon, or you could use ric rack or even cute bias binding.

swap cards & xmas garland 009 copy

5. An Iron

swap cards & xmas garland 011 copy

What to do

1. Iron your fabric. Measure strips of fabric to fit your paper pattern plus a little extra room to cut with pinking shears.

2. Make a template by tracing around a round object onto paper.
I used the little tin but you can use anything round and as small or as large as you like, whatever suits you.
Cut the circle out and pin this to your material
I put a couple of pieces of fabric together to do multiple cuts.

3. Cut out as many circles as you want then fold, iron and cut in half.

4. Lay out your half circles in a row right side down. You can either go with a pattern or just a random assortment.
I chose random ‘cause that’s just me really.

5. Run glue along the back side of your ribbon gluing semi-circles as you go.
I found it easier to add the circles to the ribbon rather than the ribbon to the circles
Continue till it’s at the length you wish.

I made mine approximately 2 meters per garland just for easy handling.

6. Hang on your Christmas tree and congratulate yourself on some handmade gorgeousness.

Just what I needed!

There are weeks and then there are weeks!!!! I’ve just had one of ‘those’ weeks. Crazy busy it has been frantic at work with the boss away and everyone deciding they want things done yesterday please! It’s been a steep learning curve having the responsibility of running a design studio on your own, but I have survived.

On another sad note our dog of 17 years is nearing the end of his life, his hips have deteriorated rapidly over the past six months and he is having trouble toileting etc.and is obviously suffering. We have decided it is time for him to be put to sleep. A sad day is looming.

I don’t like to dwell on the hard things that happen but they do make up the patchwork of our lives and of course to balance the sad there is the happy, and that’s just what came in the mail. Three very beautiful hand made postcards from Beth Nicholls of The Great Big Stitched Postcard.

swap cards & xmas garland 003

They are sitting very prettily next to my computer reminding me that there is beauty and laughter and graciousness and love and that these things live all around us and we can always look for them and embrace them anytime we want to. And how easy it is to lift the burden of someone’s day with a simple gift.

So thank-you Beth you brightened my day!
