Can You Dance Like a Kangaroo? Just asking…

Can you Dance like a kangarool

Created in Illustrator and Photoshop.

Growing up I had the privilege of having access to, and a love of the bush of Australia. My dad was a boy from the bush and he knew heaps about the flora and fauna that lived there. I grew up with the typical array of pets like dogs and cats, rabbits, budgies, the less usual goats and horses and the down right uncommon echidna (which just burrowed its way out of the backyard and went bush) or owl or lizard or snake, and I spent my younger years with a baby kangaroo that had been orphaned.

As she (Skippy, original huh?) grew bigger we would watch her ‘box’ the washing and pantyhose on the line leaning back on her massively strong tail and kicking with her back legs. When we moved into town we of course couldn’t keep her so she moved to a fauna garden and had her own joey or two.

This was back in the late Seventies when it wasn’t unlawful to have native animals as pets. We have progressed now of course and would never encourage animals being taken from their environment, these days I am very happy just to observe and appreciate from afar.

Promotions…

Oneredfox_postcard_2013

One small step towards doing this thing called illustration in the real world and hopefully making it my full time work. Promotional postcard…

If anyone would like to share any tips and tricks about how they get there illustrations in the right hands I would love to hear about it!

Now the sun is out and shining bright on this beautiful Sunday afternoon and I think I need to go and soak up some rays and relax away from the computer for a bit.

Fairy Tales

Print

Our last Pop Up Shop just before Christmas last year was so successful we have decided to do it again just before Easter this year. I am flat out getting new illustrations made, tweaking old ones and generally having a blast doing what I love. I have just started doing a series of Fairy Tale inspired prints, the one above is obviously Goldilocks and the three bears, the print doesn’t have the writing on it.

These look even better printed out. I have started using lovely Ivory Canson Mi Tieintes paper that has a nice texture to it and holds the ink really well. Framed with 8'' x 10'' white frames and white mat. All $20 each.

Hello Bebe!

You may remember the little drawing that I doodled on the corner of my page during a particularly dull moment of a short course I did recently…

BeBe

Just thought I would show you how that has come along…

BeBe_Background

this is ‘Bebe’ friend of ‘Sprig’ and one of a collection of characters that seem to be springing from my pencil at the moment. I am feeling very warm and fuzzy about them at the moment and am looking forward to making them into prints, buntings and maybe even getting them onto some bags.

Stones and Trees

This is a favourite quote of mine to remind me to slow down and listen to what nature has to say to me.

"Stones and trees speak slowly and may take a week to get out a single sentence, and there are few men, unfortunately, with the patience to wait for an oak to finish a thought." ~ Garrison Keillor

IF_Wings

IF_Wings

This weeks Illustration Friday Challenge Word is ‘Wings’.

I admit that sometimes I wish I had wings so I could just fly away from it all…especially somewhere not quite so hot! We have been having 40+ days way to regularly this summer and it’s amazing how you can look at a forecast of 37 or 38 and feel relieved. I am happiest when the temperature sits at about 25 so you can be sure I am looking forward to the onset of Autumn.

I am currently updating my portfolio and creating a mailer to post to prospective employers if anyone has some advise I would greatly appreciate it!

IF_Ocean & IF_Myth

I think I may have just squeaked in this weeks Illustration Friday challenge ‘Ocean’. Ooops nope! This weeks challenge is now ‘Myth’ …back to the drawing board…hope no one minds ‘two for one’ this week!

BeBe

Well this is cheating a little bit, but during a (slightly boring) day long course this week this little fella emerged from my pen and I realised it was the long awaited friend of a little character that I developed a couple of years ago. I have named him ‘BeBe’ for obvious reasons.

Below is the little character ‘Sprig’ I created a while ago, a little woodland pixie. I am planning to also create his sister ‘Twig’ shortly. I have sold these as cards ( I have a series of them) with a fair bit of success.

This kind of reflects my inner turmoil over the last couple of weeks as I face changing jobs and possibly having to put my illustration dreams on a back burner…

Time can be such an enemy at times.
